According to a recent report from Calcio Mercato, Everton are eyeing up a move for attacker Thorgan Hazard. The Belgium international currently plays his football in Germany with top-flight side Borussia Monchengladbach, and several impressive displays this season in the Bundesliga appears to have attracted the interest of Toffees chief Marco Silva.
And with the Portuguese reportedly keen on luring the 25-year-old, brother of Chelsea’s Eden, to Goodison Park in the near future, it could spell bad news for current Everton star Theo Walcott, valued at £18 million by Transfermarkt.
The Breakdown
Ultimately, Belgian ace Hazard is playing some of the best football of his career at present after a lightning start to the new season for Monchengladbach, what with the attacker having scored a remarkable 11 goals in just 14 appearances in all competitions.
And with eight of those goals coming in the German top-flight, all of which in his last nine appearances, the 25-year-old appears to be getting better and better, while his tally of six assists in all competitions suggests that he is also more than just a goal-scorer, he is a creator as well.
And that would stand him in good stead were he to move to Silva’s Everton, especially given Englishman Walcott has shown little signs of scoring or indeed creating in the last few months.
The former Arsenal man started the 2018/19 season reasonably well with two goals and an assist in his first three games, but since then he has failed to score in ten Premier League matches, and has just one assist to his name in that time – it’s not been good enough.
Yes, Richarlison’s transformation into a number nine in recent times does appear to have helped Walcott retain his place, but were Hazard to arrive at Goodison Park, he would surely find it difficult to make the starting eleven.
Clearly, there is a very fine player in Walcott, as evidenced by his time at Arsenal and indeed his start to life at Everton earlier this year, but things simply aren’t working for him at the moment – and in a side seeking to break into the top six and thus the European places this season, that simply isn’t what’s required.
But Hazard’s form for Monchengladbach suggest that he would undoubtedly be an upgrade on the 29-year-old, which is why any move for the Belgium international would finally rid the Toffees of the misfiring Englishman.
