Speaking to reporters after the Villa defeat, Guardiola said: "As a manager I sometimes need that – I need that challenge. For a long time we’ve lived like a cat [stroking his head] and [known] how good we are. We need it to say: ‘Guys this business – it’s terrible.’"

Guardiola guided City to a historic treble in the previous campaign but warned his players that if they do not pull up their socks then they might not qualify for the Champions League next season.
