Newcastle United are now plotting to raid Brighton & Hove Albion once more after the signing of Dan Burn and imminent appointment of Dan Ashworth, report The Daily Mail.
The Lowdown: New era at Newcastle
The Magpies’ new era is well and truly underway, with Eddie Howe kick-starting things on the pitch with a three-match winning run, which has lifted his side out of the bottom three and four points clear of the drop.
Meanwhile, Amanda Staveley and Co. are hard at work developing the club off the pitch, with The Chronicle reporting this week that Ashworth will not be the only change.
That certainly seems to be the case, with reports now revealing Staveley’s next target is yet another Seagulls figure.
The Latest: An ‘important’ addition
According to the Mail’s Adrian Kajumba, PIF want Brighton academy coach John Morling at St. James’ Park.
The report claims the deal for Ashworth is all but done and just waiting on his notice period to end, while Morling has been earmarked for a ‘key role’ in the Magpies’ youth set-up.
Brighton-based reporter Charlie Haffenden labelled the coach as ‘important’ to the Seagulls: “Newcastle now planning to raid Brighton of yet another important asset.”
He joked: “Who’s next on the list? Gully the Seagull?”
The Verdict: Very exciting
Morling looks an extremely exciting addition if Staveley and the other directors can make it happen.
The Brighton coach will know everything there is to know about bringing young players through academies, having played through the youth ranks himself at Norwich.
He moved into coaching when he was let go by the Canaries, taking his first role at Peterborough before a move to coach Ireland’s Under-17 side, where he recorded an impressive average of two points per-game.
A report by the Sussex FA reveals he was well ahead of most coaches at a very young age, achieving his full pro license at just 21 years old. The report labels his mind-set as ‘incredible’, having moved straight into coaching after his playing career faltered.
Morling is credited with developing the likes of Ben White, Robert Sanchez and Solly March on the south coast, all of whom are now first-team regulars in Premier League sides, so this certainly seems like an exciting potential appointment from Newcastle’s new regime.
Newcastle are already plotting a summer move for a ‘Rolls-Royce’ of a centre-back…
