Football fans would be forgiven for thinking that Lucas Leiva’s name on a scoresheet was a typo due to his lengthy goal drought. No such mistake was made on Wednesday night, though, after the Brazilian scored the one and only goal in Liverpool’s triumph over Plymouth Argyle in an FA Cup third-round replay at Home Park.Statisticians have revealed that it was a landmark goal for the midfielder, as it was his first in seven years for the Reds.[ad_pod id=’now-tv’ align=’centre’]
Jurgen Klopp’s men were made to work hard for their victory over League Two Plymouth, and Lucas’s goal was the difference on the night.
The 30-year-old found the back of the net by moving across to the near post and heading in a corner in the 18th minute.
Since 2011, Lucas has made 188 appearances in the Premier League and European competitions, but has not scored once in that time.
In fairness to the Brazilian, he is traditionally a defensive midfielder and more recently he has been playing as a centre-back, so goalscoring opportunities would be few and far between.
