If Paul Scholes, in his prime, was currently on the market, the former Manchester United midfielder would have a good case for being valued upwards of £80m.
The Red Devils legend turned out at Old Trafford between 1993 and 2011, before returning for the 2012-13 campaign after coming out of retirement to play one final part for his hometown club.
Scholes won 11 Premier League titles and two Champions League crowns during his time at Man United, and there are few midfielders that proved more popular than the now 42-year-old.
Scholes, like a number of his former teammates, played a part in Michael Carrick’s testimonial on Sunday afternoon, with Man United’s 2008 team coming from behind to draw 2-2 against a side managed by Harry Redknapp.
There was a particular moment in the first half of that fixture which drew a lot of attention, with Scholes picking out a 60-yard pass into Wayne Rooney as he rolled back the years with a fine performance.
Rooney was largely criticised for his performance on Sunday, but Man United’s supporters were out in force to hail Scholes, with many calling for the 66-time England international to return to Old Trafford for one final stint.
