Some Liverpool fans have taken to Twitter to bemoan Gareth Southgate’s decision to start Kieran Trippier over Trent Alexander-Arnold in England’s 4-0 win over Bulgaria on Saturday.
The former Tottenham man, who signed for Atletico Madrid in a deal worth £20m this summer, was named in Gareth Southgate’s starting XI for the UEFA European Championship qualifier against Bulgaria – despite the presence of Alexander-Arnold on the bench.
Trippier was sold to Atletico after a poor 2018/19 campaign – by his own admission – but somehow still managed to start ahead of the Liverpool No.66, who enjoyed a simply stunning season last term.
Alexander-Arnold won the Champions League whilst racking up 16 assists in all competitions, but was still placed on the bench against Bulgaria in favour of Trippier.
One fan below said that he finds the whole situation ‘laughable’, whilst another said that he was ‘gobsmacked’ to see Trippier ahead of Alexander-Arnold.
Let’s take a look at what the Liverpool fans on Twitter have been saying…
